Alajuela
Costa Rica is a treasure of natural beauty, from its vibrant jungles and lush forests to its incredible wildlife. Having visited twice, I can say that each experience had something different to offer.
Below are my top must-sees that should be on your Costa Rican itinerary, presented in no particular order.
Parque Nacional Volcan Poas
I happened to visit this park during a rain storm, but how does one really experience a rainforest without the rain, anyways, right?!
Once my family and I arrived to the park, we walked along a paved path and soon found ourselves standing high above a volcano, believed to be around 5,000 years old and one of the largest craters in the world. This park has plenty of paved trails that make for a perfect hike. Even for those who are not avid walkers, the paths are accessible and you won’t even notice the effort!
La Paz Waterfall Gardens
A half-hour drive from Poas Volcano will take you to La Paz Waterfall Gardens, home to five breathtaking waterfalls, which, are the most magnificent waterfalls I’ve ever seen. La Paz is also home to Costa Rica’s largest animal sanctuary, and I couldn't help but fall in love with the incredible wildlife the country is famous for. Don’t worry, they’re friendly!
Termalitdas Del Arenal
Did you know that hot springs have many natural healing properties? Termalitdas Del Arenal has waters coming from the nearby Arenal Volcano (one of the most active volcanoes in Costa Rica), and is truly an unforgettable experience. The warm waters at the hot spring are heated by volcanic activity, making a dip in the springs the perfect relaxation I was seeking. I went at night (they’re open until 10 PM), and, let me tell you, if I could hop on a plane just to come back to this place, I absolutely would!
La Fortuna Waterfalls
If you're looking for an adventure-filled getaway, La Fortuna is definitely the place to be! While I didn’t participate in the activities offered, it’s the spot for those seeking some extra fun. For me, the main draw was hiking down to the famous La Fortuna Waterfall, located in Parque Nacional Volcan Tenorio. The hike to this stunning 70-meter waterfall takes you through the lush green rainforest, and, at the end of the hike, you'll be rewarded with a view of the pristine blue pool at the base of the falls. Absolutely breathtaking!
